DocuWest Film Festival Announces Its 2010 Event Series June 23-27, 2010 The 2nd annual DocuWest Film Festival will present 32 fascinating
films from well-recognized, global filmmakers, including the highly-anticipated
screening of three 2010 Academy Award-nominated and winning short films on the
Festival's opening night.
Golden, CO, June 8, 2010---The second annual DocuWest Documentary
Film Festival, presented June 23-27 by Foothills Art Center, announces a new
series of Festival Events aimed at enriching the five-day film celebration.
Kicking off the series is the highly-anticipated Opening Night, taking place
Wednesday, June 23rd, which will feature the presentation of three 2010 Academy
Award-nominated short films. The event series continues with an Environmental
and Mountaineering Night, a NEW Colorado Creates film series highlighting
Colorado Filmmakers, and an exclusive VIP DocuWesters' Event on Saturday, June
26th. With each event highlighting a specific film or selection of films, this
year's event series is, as DocuWest Festival Director Reilly Sanborn said, "very representative of the DocuWest vision. We are committed to showing
high-quality films with varied content, and films that touch the heart and help
march viewers into action."
Opening Night Wednesday, June 23, 6-9 pm The three short documentaries being shown this evening
include the Academy Award-winningMusic By Prudence, a film which follows
Prudence, a young girl from Zimbabwe, who was born with a debilitating
condition but a beautiful singing voice. The film journeys with Prudence as she
transcends from a world of neglect and hatred to one of music, love and possibility.
DocuWest's Opening Night will also feature The Last Truck: Closing of a GM
Plant, which was filmed at an Ohio-based General Motors plant and follows a
group of hardworking individuals suffering from the literal and emotional
consequences of an enormous layoff; and China's Unnatural Disaster: The Tears
of Sichuan Province, a film that documents the destruction, corruption and
incompetence resulting from a catastrophic earthquake hitting the Sichuan
Province of China in 2008.
Environment and Mountaineering Night Thursday, June 24, 5:30-10 pm This night of film will highlight environmental topics,
featuring A Life Ascending, a film about a world-class ski mountaineering guide
and his young family who navigate the aftermath of a massive avalanche in which
seven people died. The screening will be followed by a discussion with
filmmaker Stephen Grynberg.
Colorado Creates:
Spotlighting Colorado
Filmmakers DNC Mediamockracy, Thursday, June 24, 8:30-10 pm Sole Journey, Saturday, June 26, 1-3 pm NEW to this year's festival and featuring the local talent
of political and social documentarians, such as Sheila Shroeder's Sole Journey,
and Mitch Dickman'sDNC Mediamockracy.
DocuWesters' Event Saturday, June 26, 5-7:30 pm The festival's newest and most exclusive VIP event will
screen A Life Ascending, Academy Award-nominated The Last Truck: Closing of a
GM Plant, and offer a Q&A with attending filmmakers. Cocktails and hors
d'oeuvres served throughout the event; $50/ticket.
DocuWest screening venues include Foothills Art Center, 809
15th Street, Golden; the American Mountaineering Center, 710 10th Street,
Golden; Miners Alley Playhouse, 1224 Washington Ave. Ste 200, Golden; and The
Golden Hotel, 800 11th Street, Golden.
